Increasing reports of assaults by ticket inspectors and police because of minor infractions of the troublesome MYKI system are being reported.

That’s what has happened under our noses in the last few years.
What was wrong with the ‘Metcard’ paper card system?
The EFTPOS on the ticket vending machines was rather slow.
Monthly tickets were likely to be damaged after about 3 weeks of use.
Paper cards don’t mix with water obviously.
Allegedly the ticket system vendor was going out of business.
Now I’m struggling to think of issues that come close to the debacle that is MYKI.
What is wrong with the ‘Myki’ card system?
Slower card reading.
Twice as much card use on trams/ buses, with the need to touch off.
Touching off on a crowded tram is a nightmare.
Longer queues at gates.
Vending machine very prone to vandalism and faults.
Aggressive ticket inspector regime.
Cards prone to unknown damage and having zero value as unreadable.
Replacement cards costing $6 and having zero credit preloaded.
No hard copy proof of payment on card, even the printed receipt is not proof of paying for service.
Unknown cost of travel. with the paper card it was clear to everyone how much time you had left.
Slow ticket top up times, slower than the Metcard EFTPOS issue.
Hard for people in wheelchairs to use.
Trains have to wait longer at station due to longer queues.
New issues emerging all the time.
MYKI makes me realize what was so good about the paper ‘Metcards’.
A better question is; “what isn’t wrong with Myki?”
How much is 1.5 BILLION dollars?
31.1 tons of gold (a cube of gold 117 cm long on each edge).
So we spent 1.5 BILLION dollars on a ticket system for a train system when the previous ticket actually worked quite well.
In fact ‘Metcard’ was the most reliable part of the entire public transport network. Have a valid ‘Metcard’, benefit of doubt given by any one with good vision.
But rather than pointlessly complain like a bunch of retarded Marxists, we offer alternatives.
What else could we have purchased for 1.5 BILLION dollars for Victoria?

A mission to Mars.
Crazy as it sounds we could have afforded it for this much money.
Seriously we could have had our own space programme, not an Australian space programme, a Victorian government space programme. Beat that Sydney. We got the AFL grand final AND a rover on Mars. Imagine the cross promotion there, if you win the grand final you get your team logo outside the ‘MCG and on the surface of Mars .
Queensland has Movieworld, we could have had Spaceworld. Nice one XXXX drinkers you made a movie about outer space, we went there and made a movie about it.
Think of the tourism spin off, Melbourne would be on the map as the place in Australia to visit, we could have our own cape Canaveral, the whole 9 yards. Think of science and technology spin offs from having all the work done here.
Free public transport in Victoria for 4 years.
Not long term sustainable perhaps, but what a pork barrel for any politician who could claim they supported it. makes for great re-election advertising (very subtle hint). I can Just see John So stepping of a bus in a re-election campaign add saying “In Melbourne we choose bus, free bus!”. Great for the environment, get more cars off the roads, reduces parking problems in commuter areas. Of course this attacks too many vested interests (should I say rackets), parking building industry, parking ticket industry, oil companies, ticket inspector enforcer industry, people who sell cost inflated useless ticketing systems (Myki),etc…
A larger rail network.
Imagine an outer ring of rail skirting the edge of the zone 1 / zone 2 boundary or the very outer edge of zone 2. easier to get from suburb to suburb without traveling in and then changing train and then traveling out again. The proposed Doncaster extention is $400M, we could afford more than 3 rail lines of that length for the money.
A new industry for Victoria? You can buy a lot with 1.5 BILLION dollars.
We have the second most extensive tram network in the world we could go for the number 1 spot and knock St Petersburg out of the top spot.

But no we got a plastic card that magnetically stores your name in it. I could get such a gimmick at Vic markets for $1, or 10 for $8.
There has got to be something rotten with MYKI
So with such an enormous sum of money being spent on such a substandard product, there has got to be something dirty going on.
Actually there are many dirty things going on:
The stench of corruption in the vendor selection process.
Why was a working system from another city not used and slightly modified, it would have been much cheaper.
The enormous cost and time blow out of the project. 3.3 times budget cost, 2 years late.
It’s the most expensive system of its type in the world.
Old card ‘Metcard’ reader machines were needlessly junked, even though they could read Myki cards.
The spy tool aspect of the system: users can be easily followed and monitored.
The dividing people into socioeconomic groups, targeting concession card holders for harassment.
