This linked story relates to the situation in the USA, but as a fun fact here in Australia land ‘ownership’ papers have the purchaser listed as ‘tenant’ not owner. In law a tenant is someone who pays rent to live on land owned by some one else. The rates are just one example of rent one must pay for their own land and to do as the rate collectors demand of the tenants. So do you really own land in Australia? nope.
