OM History: The Birth Of The Free Shop

This action occurred on the 19th January 2012, afer a tv documentary night (Gasland) /overnight occupation at City Square. Some of our members went dumpster diving and scored vast amounts of chocolate bars in excellent condition, which we proceeded to give away to passing cab drivers ( and others ).

Overnight occupiers made a chalk sign on a concrete paver saying “Free Chocolate”. The following day occupiers built a stall out of cardboard boxes and gave away more chocolate to the public. The council, playing their usual game of ” You can’t have “things” in the square ” dismantled this stall and took it away. But you cannot kill an idea. 9 months later, on the first anniversary of Occupy Melbourne (15th October 2012) the first official Free Shop opened at City Square , giving away free toys.
