What the F**k, An expression of disbelief, and confusion.
Its spooky when you create an example of the insanity of central planning by selecting a product at random and then explain how central planning would fail in managing supply of said product.
The real problem with central planning (a communist / Marxist economic paradigm) is that the real world is simply far to complex to model for a handful of bureaucrats. I used the example of vacuum cleaners and explained the insanity that ultimately you would need a minister for each product, of course each minister would need a salary and then attempt to manage production and supply of vacuum cleaners. Ultimately this is a fascist corporate monopoly and completely impossible to do.
After giving this example to a European tourist she mentioned that the European Union was about to ban the sale or importation of high powered vacuum cleaners.
I laughed hard.
This insane knee jerk reaction really made me laugh. I was imagining people hoarding vacuum cleaners soviet style. Then it actually happened.
So the next trip of why Marxism fails is this, why are there so many different types of vacuum cleaners? Because people have different needs.
You might find your eye drawn to the red out lined words “Pets 2000W”, some people have pets and need more power to remove animal hair form the floor.
So how is the minister of vacuum cleaners going to know what kind of vacuum cleaner the people want? Why would he care? Where is the additional motivation for the minister to innovate or increase the efficiency of production.
After you start asking yourself these questions, you will realize the impossibility of central planning.
So why the sudden hatred of high power vacuum cleaners?
Supposedly it is an energy efficiency measure. Strangely these bureaucrats failed to notice an important trend (because of course they have no incentive to care at all). Central planners refuse to think of people as individuals and would rather people fit tot he economic paradigm rather than the economic paradigm needing to fit the nature of people as individuals.
The important trend:
The decoupling of electric power consumption with GDP. These days it seem we are either using as much power as we could possibly desire, and/or able to more with the same energy consumption.
If you consider how much of the GDP is generated by computers (algo trading, software and data processing industry) and how much more efficient they have become in terms of teraflops per MW of the last few decades this chart make some sense.
Are you going to feel less or more comfortable at 23C than at 22C, there is even a limit to how fussy people want to be a about heating and cooling along with a greater focus on energy efficiency. It would seem the west has lost its appetite for electricity consumption.
So is it really going to make any sense to vacuum for twice as long with a 1000W vacuum cleaner, than once with a 200W vacuum cleaner? No and I would bet there is a sweet spot where energy is reduced and cleaning is maximized. So any way would you vacuum all day just for the sake of it,?well no. We are talking about a device that get used infrequently and for short periods of time.
I guess the minister of vacuum cleaners has to justify the high office he/she wants to hold.
I should admit now that I am a capitalist pig with two vacuum cleaners each of 1000W.
The more disturbing elements to this case are the following:
Authorities refused to act due to fears of being branded a racist, because perpetrators were Pakistani in origin.
Pedophiles were transporting children to be abused in a network style operation.
Fathers attempting to rescue their children were arrested by police.
This man received serious head injuries as a result of being assaulted by a wanted criminal attempting to steal a hand gun.
Don’t let cognitive dissonance cloud your thinking
Don’t let the Marxist and thugs win the media war or allow the political sacrifice of a man trying to save his own life.
Here at occupy we saw real heavy handed unprovoked use of force by police. We were beaten, robbed, harassed and slandered. When did we resort to looting or violent assaults on the public, never. We know what real injustice looks like and we know a Marxist media hijack when we see one. The tactics are always the same. Ignore and/or suppress facts, manipulate opinion, make illogical, emotionally laden arguments, ad-hominem attacks on opponents and even on victims of serious crimes making a formal complaint.
Officer Wilson will possibly be partly blind in one eye for life, his opponents have always been willingly ‘one eyed’ for some time.
Pants up, Don’t loot.
Clive Palmer has now shown what a shrewd operator he is. Many saw his apparent spray at the Chinese government as an off the cuff frustration as the QandA presenter pressured him on a commercial case he was embroiled in. Whether Clive realized it not (an we suspect with the money he has he can afford the best advice) he attacked at the most critical point.
Clive has shown he is able to legitimately convert financial power into political and media power.
This gave Clive Palmer two powerful weapons in his current cases against a Chinese business over money he is owed.
The Chinese government hates scandals.
In Australian English ‘Mongrel’ means or mixed breed dog , applied to sports (particularly boxing) means tough aggressive man.
Mike Tyson’s boxing style might be described as Mongrel, tough, aggressive, and lacking complex technique.
When translated, the term Mongrel means mixed or hybrid.
Chinese are very sensitive on questions of race and race mixing and genealogy.
Bastard looses nothing in the translation but is generally considered more offensive in China than here, as the Chinese are very conservative in family matters.
Chinese are also very sensitive to insults in general, so much effort is spend on keeping up good appearances (saving face) it becomes a significant distraction in day to day life.
Chinese people eats dogs and wealthy people eat more dogs that those who are poor. Chinese people realize westerners find the idea of eating dog objectionable seeing dogs largely as beloved pets or animals of service. Even wild or feral dogs which are culled are not eaten in the west, eating dog s is seen as a cultural taboo through much of the west.
Bastard also continues the theme of sexual improper conduct and adds in illegitimacy and despicable nature.
The most curious thing about the uses of these insults is that they are an anachronism even for someone of Clive Palmer’s age. The terms are now obscure in language generally, and are considered locally only mildly offensive.
So a mildly offensive remark in the Australian vernacular translates via a dog whistle (pun intended) to a highly offensive slur against a litigation opponent very much under control of the Chinese government. It entirely possible this scandal has reduced the resolve of Palmer’s opponent in the court case due to Chinese Government political pressure. On the third party adjudicator side of the commercial case, the court is now under pressure to resolve the case in Palmer’s favor, as he is willing to damage trade relations with a very important international trade partner. Palmer’s PUP party has a controlling wedge in the senate, able to block any legislation the opposition wont support. The opposition is unlikely to support Liberal/national policy because of its shock doctrine budget.
That’s a hell of a gambit by a man who can afford to move large pieces on the board.
Clive Palmer clearly is economically rational and hardly a man to do any thing without very careful precognition. Palmer openly admits he rarely attends the lower house where he is a member citing the fact his single vote there generally makes little difference in the outcomes. This in itself a dog whistle to the disenchanted vote who see both major parties as being out of touch and rightly seeing greens as being destructive Marxists. This was no accident, it was a carefully planned and disguised scandal to get leverage in his commercial case.
The apology was a week in forth coming so one can imagine the back room horse trading that was done to produce such an apology and smooth things over.
Billionaire mining magnates don’t apologize for free.
Clive Palmer now has significant leverage in his commercial case, after all he would not appear on a leftist echo chamber like QandA without a good reason.
Money is always a good reason.
*Scoring political points a good ancillary benefit.
How did the Chinese government feel about this?
Heres a clue, be sure to read the comment to this Chinese newspaper link.
Justice Flick, one of three appeal judges, said he had reviewed footage of the removal of the tent dress and was shocked by what he saw.
“Those who made the directions for this conduct to be pursued should be shot. It’s grossly offensive,” he said.

Remember a knife was cutting the tent apart just inches from the back of Kerrsions neck during the incident. This knife (called a tool by Victoria Police) was provided to MCC workers by Victoria Police during the incident. One of the council workers refused to take part in the incident and walked away, though the remaining MCC workers and police mindlessly abused the young woman by tearing away her clothes and leaving her in her underwear on the grass.
This incident occurred the day after Victoria police were humiliated by the original tent monster action which saw Kerrison and two other” tent monsters” run around the park and utterly demoralize Victoria police who felt like the fools that they were.
Clearly Victoria police don’t know the meaning of the phrase :”It’s all in good fun”
After a bit of mainstream media speculation yesterday, whether Julian Assange was about to surrender to British police due to ill health , Assange himself made a statement that he will soon walk out of the Ecuadorian embassy for “other” reasons than the ones given by the media . The British extradition laws have changed, but do apparently not apply to previous cases, so it doesn’t appear that the British goverment will let him walk out officially. So what is the story?
Not that we want to give anything away, but it seems, what Assange is really planning is a good old fashioned “jailbreak!!”
Here is a list of previous suggestions :http://eduncovered.com/trapped-in-the-closet-10-ways-for-julian-assange-to-exit-the-ecuadorian-embassy-2012-08-17
It probably won’t be one of those. Maybe they did build a tunnel with a spoon that leads directly to Ecuador and teleportation is always an option too, but I’m guessing that it will be a surprise, a plot with many twists involving, amongst others, Edward Snowden and German Chancellor Angela Merckel.
If it happens, remember, you read it here first , not on Boing Boing and not in The Age via Boing Boing either…
Good luck, Julian, we wish we could drive the getaway car !
In a move equally insane to Sweden’s “Political Correctness laws “, the government productivity commission is now offering to pay grandparents for the caring of their grandchildren: …. if they get childcare certificate 3 tafe qualification first.
I can hear my grandmothers and former mother-in law roaring from the grave (with laughter). What does that even mean? Qualified grandparents?
Grandparents, provided they are not too old and frail, make wonderful additonal carers for children, as they provide experience, patience and love that younger carers and nannies often lack.
Their most valuable contribution, however, is to add another perspective.
It is understandable that some of them could do with the extra income and it seems fair that if the government is willing to fund childcare that grandparents get their share too, especially since so many older women spent years raising their own children , therefore missing out on regular income then, and now suffering the financial consequences.
However, by and large, being a grandparent should be the only qualification you need for the job. Mums and Dads get a “parenting”payment if they choose to stay home to care for their offspring now. Does this mean that once grandparents have to complete a certificate 3, parents are soon to follow? After all, they are less qualified than grandparents, especially with he first child, which is often an only child these days.
The next step of this descent into hell is – of course – to make all parents and grandparents get qualified in state-brainwash-early -childhood-education , then take the money away and also , eventually, the children , branding it child abuse if you refuse to take the course. Then all children will be raised by “properly” trained robots. Welcome to to “Brave New World” and “1984” rolled into one.
It’s just another way for the government to meddle in people’s affairs and control things right from the start by brainwashing everyone into raising all children the same way (obedient citizen-slaves) without different perspectives adding another dimension. The raising of children becomes a job not much different from animal factory farming, something that is deplorable in itself.
Controlling people through laws and regulations only serves to destroy trust between people and with this even extended families are not allowed to trust each other anymore.
Sadly, the only way to avoid this dangerous slippery slope is not to take the money in the first place.
Jonathan Moylan had his own Mega Mosque moment when he created a parody email system called ANZcorporate and sent out fake press releases claiming a col mining project had lost it line of credit from ANZ, of course the share price when tumbling because all this is fake money and can disappear in an instant. Then the banksters got angry that people were figuring out their dirty tricks, his ‘roumortrage’ (rumor and arbitrage) had done real damage, but he unlike banksters had refused to take monetary advantage from it all.
Court case ensues, found guilty but unlikely to face jail because these kinds of finance crimes always have precedent and are usually accompanied by light sentences.
Amazing the kind of damage you can do with a few dollars, a clever idea and stone cold bluff.
Because absolutely nothing can be a real cool hand.
